Kristin Caldwell, chief of veterinary operations, highlighted that the open house is an annual celebration. "Every year we celebrate Animal Health Week the first week in October. It's just a great way for us to celebrate our profession and open our doors to the community," she said.
The teddy bear hospital included several educational stations, such as bandaging, dental care, X-rays, and general examinations. Caldwell described how children could bring their stuffed animals to learn about animal care. At the dental station, they examined tools used in veterinary medicine, while the X-ray station allowed visitors to view pet X-rays and receive mock diagnoses. A general examination station enabled participants to weigh their stuffed animals and assess their health.
Caldwell introduced the teddy bear surgery suite, explaining the monitoring protocols akin to those for human surgeries: checking vital signs like blood pressure and heart rate.
The event was designed for anyone interested in veterinary medicine, not just children, as Caldwell emphasized the community's fascination with the field.
Additionally, the open house included a bake sale and barbecue, with proceeds supporting animals needing medical care without owners or associated organizations. Caldwell explained that these funds help provide necessary medical care for such animals.
A petting zoo showcased goats, bunnies, chickens, and kittens, while face painting was also available, provided by a talented veterinary technician and artist named Katie.
Caldwell expressed hope for a strong turnout from community members, encouraging all to visit and learn more about veterinary medicine.
