The report found that 15% of London pet owners conducted no research before acquiring a pet, raising concerns about their understanding of essential factors like suitable species for their lifestyle and the necessary care, such as training and enrichment. Additionally, only 17% of pet owners considered the financial implications of pet ownership, an important consideration during the ongoing cost of living crisis.
The survey revealed that 61% of pet owners sourced their animals online, which carries risks related to irresponsible breeding. PDSA warns that verifying the legitimacy of sellers is crucial to ensure animal welfare.
On nutrition, the report indicated that 15% of owners believe their pets need to lose weight, a figure that PDSA suggests is likely underestimated. Being overweight can lead to serious health issues such as arthritis and breathing difficulties, making effective weight management essential.
In terms of exercise, 38% of dog owners reported walking their pets for 30 minutes or less each day. This duration may not meet the exercise needs for many dogs, which depends on various factors including breed and health. Insufficient exercise could lead to undesirable behaviors, as indicated by findings that dogs walked less than 30 minutes were significantly more likely to exhibit excessive barking.
Furthermore, the report noted that 49% of dogs and 29% of cats in London are not neutered, exposing them to preventable health risks. PDSA recommends that veterinary professionals assist owners in making informed decisions about neutering and its implications.
PDSA vet Anna Ewers-Clark emphasized the importance of prevention and early intervention in ensuring pets lead healthy lives. She stated that by improving knowledge among pet owners, they can better understand their pets' needs and make informed decisions that enhance pet welfare.
Baroness Hayman of Ullock, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, acknowledged the vital role pets play in society and the corresponding responsibility of owners to meet their welfare needs. She underscored the importance of reports like the PAW Report in shedding light on the challenges faced by pet owners.
PDSA aims to empower pet owners with knowledge and resources, encouraging them to take part in the online PDSA Pet Check Challenge to assess their understanding of pet care and identify ways to improve their pets’ wellbeing.
