ST. JOSEPH, Mich. - The Humane Society of Southwestern Michigan has officially opened a new facility to enhance its services, named the Mary C. Grish Community Pet Center. This new 6,000 square-foot building was made possible by a significant donation left by Mary Grish, a local resident who wished to ensure care for her cat when she could no longer keep it. After seeking assistance from the Humane Society, which later adopted her cat and kept her informed of its progress, Grish bequeathed an estate valued between $800,000 and $900,000 for the pet center.

The new center will accommodate large events, including essential spay and neuter vaccine clinics, and provide greater opportunities for animal exercise. Executive Director Robin Lydic noted that last year's cold weather made it difficult for the dogs to exercise adequately, limiting staff to short play sessions. Now, the shelter will be able to utilize the barn's agility course during inclement weather.
The construction of the center took three years to finalize, with Lydic mentioning that community members had frequently inquired about its opening. She explained that they encountered various challenges related to permits and water management but successfully navigated these hurdles.
Additionally, the Cook Power Plant contributed $75,000 toward acquiring spay and neuter equipment, facilitating participation in the Bissell Fix the Future program.
