Audrey, a three-year-old dog, arrived at the humane society in June along with her six newborn puppies. Since then, she has faced significant medical challenges, including diagnoses of heartworm and Lyme disease, as well as multiple fractured teeth.
Nicole Swartzentruber, Manager of Animal Care for the Stratford Perth Animal Centre, highlighted Audrey's resilience as she cared for her puppies despite her own suffering. All six puppies were placed in forever homes by late summer, while Audrey continues to require further medical treatment to ensure her recovery.
The humane society has launched the initiative "A second chance for Audrey" to appeal for community support in covering her medical costs, which are projected to reach $8,500. To aid in this effort, they have partnered with Guelph-based artist Nala&Co. to create a limited-edition clothing collection featuring designs inspired by Audrey. A portion of the sales from these items will directly contribute to her recovery fund.
Additionally, the HSKWSP aims to use Audrey's story to raise awareness about the importance of veterinary care, as well as the risks of heartworm and Lyme disease.
