At Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio, a Military Working Dog and Defender Demonstration showcased the collaboration between military and law enforcement agencies from the region.

Veterinary teams play a crucial role in ensuring the health and fitness of these working dogs, often viewed as tactical athletes. According to SPC Meiling Durzinsky, an animal care specialist with over six years of experience, the Army offers the unique opportunity to engage directly in veterinary missions with the dogs.

Durzinsky explained that comprehensive care includes semi-annual radiographs of the dogs’ hips and annual blood work to ensure their overall health. The emphasis is on preventive care, conditioning, and proper nutrition to prepare the dogs for diverse tasks like patrol duties and deployment missions.

SSgt. Stephanie Swisher and her nearly nine-year-old partner Kkaun exemplify this teamwork. Swisher described their daily routine, which often involves patrols and detection duties around the base. Together, they are also involved in secret service missions, having protected various high-profile individuals worldwide.

“We couldn’t do it without them. They are 95% of the team,” Swisher remarked about the indispensable role of military dogs in their operations.

As Kkaun and Swisher prepare for retirement after a year and a half together, their bond highlights the loyalty and dedication these dogs display, always ready to safeguard their handlers and complete their missions.
