In August 2025, Zoey, a gray-and-white pit bull, was brought to the Darlington County Humane Society in Hartsville, South Carolina. Abandoned and diagnosed with heartworm disease, her chances of finding a home were bleak. The humane society had recently joined The Rescue Effect, an ASPCA campaign aimed at helping animals find loving homes.

Despite her friendly demeanor and easy interactions with other dogs, Zoey struggled to draw attention from potential adopters, many of whom were deterred by her health issues. This changed in May 2026 when Alicia S. and Thomas K. met her nearly 10 months after her arrival at the shelter. The couple overlooked her diagnosis and chose to adopt her.
Autumn Fowler, executive director of the Darlington County Humane Society, noted the significance of Zoey's adoption. "Zoey’s adoption was especially meaningful because she was with us for so long and had become a favorite among staff, volunteers, and community supporters. When Alicia and Thomas met her, they saw a dog who deserved a chance.”
After her adoption, Zoey became heartworm-free and quickly adapted to her new life, undergoing the necessary veterinary care. Now cherished in her forever home, she enjoys her days playing and relaxing with Alicia and Thomas.
The couple was also fostering a dog named Buffy, who had been experiencing seizures and facing an uncertain future. Their patience and care helped Buffy flourish in her foster environment.
As Alicia and Thomas prepared to relocate across the country, they realized they had developed a strong bond with Buffy and didn’t want to let her go. In July, they officially adopted her, marking a new chapter for the family as they moved to Montana together.
Today, both Zoey and Buffy thrive on two acres, enjoying their lives as beloved pets. Fowler remarked, "Alicia and Thomas’ decision to foster gave Buffy the stability she needed, which opened their hearts to Zoey. Two shelter dogs with uncertain futures now embark on an adventure together, thanks to one family's commitment to say yes—twice."
