Brookhaven Town Supervisor Dan Panico praised Dr. Ashley Caruana and the staff at the Brookhaven Animal Shelter for their exceptional effort during this year's Free Rabies Clinic Program, which achieved a record of 1,254 animal vaccinations.

The program, organized in collaboration with the Suffolk County Department of Health, included six Saturday clinics that offered free rabies vaccinations for dogs, cats, and ferrets. The initiative aims to protect both pets and residents from rabies and make preventive veterinary care more accessible to local families.
“I want to congratulate Dr. Ashley Caruana and everyone at the Animal Shelter, the public, and the Town of Brookhaven for bringing in our furriest of friends,” Panico stated. He noted that the program not only met but exceeded its vaccination goals, thanks to grants provided by the Suffolk County Health Department.
Panico highlighted the strong community participation, saying, “I’m proud to say that more than 1,254 animals, including dogs, cats, and even some ferrets, were vaccinated as part of this program.”
The program culminated in a busy final clinic, where shelter staff vaccinated 262 animals in one day, consisting of 207 dogs and 55 cats, all at no cost to pet owners.
These rabies clinics are part of the Brookhaven Animal Shelter's wider initiative to promote public health and responsible pet ownership. The shelter also runs various other programs throughout the year, including Feral Cat Fridays and ongoing dog and cat adoption efforts.
