Family Withdraws Adoption of Cat After FIV Diagnosis

Starfish, a fluffy white cat, was set to be adopted by a family, but their plans changed after they discovered she is FIV positive. Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) is a viral infection that impairs a cat's immune system over time. Despite this condition, many cats can lead a normal life with appropriate care.

A TikTok video from @franflight shared Starfish's story, highlighting the misconception surrounding FIV. On-screen text reflected the family’s reluctance, stating, "She's pretty, but I don't want a sick cat." The video emphasized that FIV+ cats are not 'sick' cats and that the virus should not deter potential adopters. FIV is primarily transmitted through deep bites during aggressive encounters but does not spread through grooming or casual interactions with other cats.

Starfish is six years old, accustomed to living with other cats, and is described as playful and affectionate. The NAWS Humane Society is looking for a new adopter who will embrace Starfish's FIV status. The organization hopes to find her a loving home where she can thrive.
