Midwestern University has decided to suspend plans for the proposed Chicago College of Veterinary Medicine at its Downers Grove campus. As part of its ongoing planning efforts, Midwestern University evaluated the necessary resources, infrastructure, clinical capacity, and long-term investments required to support a new four-year Doctor of Veterinary Medicine program. The evaluation highlighted the benefits of concentrating efforts on established programs rather than launching a new college.
Joshua Baker, O.D., M.S., President and CEO, expressed that the decision was challenging due to the extensive planning involved in developing the proposed program. He emphasized that focusing on existing programs is in the best long-term interest of the University and its students. Baker also acknowledged the contributions of Dr. Coretta Cosby Patterson and many other colleagues in this process.
Despite the pause, Baker noted that overall enrollment at the University remains strong and interest in its programs is increasing. The University is committed to investing in its academic programs, clinical operations, and strategic priorities, guided by a disciplined strategy and prudent financial management.
Baker stated, "We are responding to this momentum with targeted investments that enhance the vibrancy of our campuses and advance healthcare education."
The Downers Grove campus continues to support various healthcare education programs, including the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine, College of Pharmacy, College of Dental Medicine–Illinois, Chicago College of Optometry, College of Graduate Studies, and College of Health Sciences.
