Purina Pro Plan Veterinary has inaugurated the Purina Pro Plan Wellness Center at Utah State University (USU) to enhance the mental health and well-being of veterinary students. The wellness center includes private rooms for one-on-one consultations with wellness specialists and facilities for meditation and mindfulness, promoting self-care alongside clinical education. Michael Bishop, the director of student affairs at USU's CVM, emphasized the importance of integrating well-being into veterinary education, noting that students should develop both clinical skills and the resilience needed for a demanding career.

USU is also expanding its four-year Doctor of Veterinary Medicine program, which began in August 2025 with 39 incoming students and expanded to 77 first-year students in fall 2030, following a move to the new Thomas and Patricia Willis Veterinary Medical Education building in summer 2026.

Veterinarians often face significant stress and burnout, with studies indicating that around 32% of first-year veterinary students exhibit clinical levels of depressive symptoms. Emily Cross, DVM, of Purina, remarked on the rewarding yet challenging nature of veterinary medicine and emphasized the importance of well-being resources from the outset of students' careers.

The USU College of Veterinary Medicine gained provisional accreditation from the American Veterinary Medical Association Council on Education in 2025 and is dedicated to producing skilled and compassionate veterinary professionals.

Since its establishment in 2024, the Pro Plan Veterinary Support Mission has allocated over $3.5 million to various organizations addressing veterinary challenges, including mental health support and financial assistance for veterinary care. The Wellness Center at USU expands this mission by investing in the mental health resources available to students during a crucial stage of their training.
