Four of the 30 dogs rescued from a hoarding situation in North Fort Myers are now up for adoption at Lee County Domestic Animal Services (DAS). The dogs were found living in unsanitary conditions at a home on Sabal Gardens Drive, where deputies discovered one deceased dog and subsequently arrested the homeowner, Mary Paulis.

Lee County DAS staff worked diligently to care for the dogs, many of which were heavily soiled. Karen Hoel from Lee County DAS noted, "One of the best parts of this job is to see the entire team come together in a situation like this, work long hours, do things that are outside of their normal job realm." Initially arriving late at night, the puppies were bathed immediately upon arrival, and further cleaning was conducted the following day.
Sergio Perez, deputy director at Lee County DAS, explained that while one of the rescued dogs requires time to heal following a leg amputation, the Animal Care Trust Fund aided in covering the surgery costs. Most of the other dogs have been relocated to rescue partners across the region, including locations in Naples and Tampa, allowing for space at the shelter for more animals in need.
For those interested in adopting one of the four available dogs, Lee County DAS encourages potential adopters to visit their facility.
