Unsecured Door Found at Former Toledo Chemical Storage Facility; Dog Rescued from Roof

TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) - A former chemical storage facility on Nebraska Avenue in Toledo has been reported as unsecured, raising concerns about access to the site. During an investigation by the I-TEAM, a dog was discovered stuck on the roof of the Omni Polymers building.

The situation drew attention due to the open door on the premises, which has been left unguarded. As authorities noted, the dog, not belonging to the site, was eventually rescued by the Toledo Humane Society after some effort.

This facility was under scrutiny in 2024 when Toledo Fire and Rescue, along with the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), investigated the site following leaks of stored chemicals into nearby Swan Creek. The EPA's remediation efforts led to the removal of hazardous materials after discovering over 2,300 containers on site, some containing dangerous substances like cyanide and arsenic.

Currently, the west side of the property features a large, unsecured door that presents a risk of unauthorized entry. City officials are treating the site as any other abandoned commercial property. A statement from the city indicated that the EPA completed its cleanup in July and that crews will conduct site surveys to enhance security. All hazardous materials have been successfully removed, but concerns about access remain.
