Alexa Chapman recently visited her local animal shelter to meet a senior cat named Merlin, who had been surrendered due to severe dental issues. Chapman, with Longleaf Animal Rescue, was eager to give Merlin a new chance at life, though she was largely unaware of his backstory.

While reviewing Merlin's file in her car, Chapman came across a handwritten note that moved her to tears. The note described Merlin as a “very sweet, gentle, [and] loving” tabby cat, and was written by an elderly widow who was heartbroken to surrender him. She explained that she could no longer afford the medical care Merlin needed, and her letter detailed the distressing symptoms he had been experiencing.

“He cannot swallow,” the note read. “He gags and chokes on food. It terrifies him, and he has stopped eating over the past few days.” The widow mentioned that Merlin was one of 26 cats she cared for, and despite providing him with wet food, she could discern that something was wrong.

Chapman felt a deep sadness learning about Merlin's prolonged suffering. The widow's affection was evident when she wrote, “I love him. I would take care of him forever.” Chapman immediately contacted the woman to inform her that she had saved Merlin. The emotional conversation left both women in tears, as the widow expressed her fear that no one would help him.

Chapman promised to ensure Merlin would receive the care he needed. After taking him into foster care, she arranged for a veterinary appointment where a surgical procedure to remove his teeth was deemed necessary. Despite his discomfort prior to the surgery, Merlin’s loving personality shone through.

“Merlin has been the sweetest boy from the very beginning,” said Chapman. “Most cats don’t like to be picked up, but Merlin loves to be held and pet.” Following his dental surgery and a short recovery, Chapman reported that Merlin is now feeling much better.

Longleaf Animal Rescue is actively seeking adoption applications for Merlin. They are looking for a home that accommodates his need for affection and comfort, ideally with someone who is at home often and has a catio for him to enjoy the outdoors safely. Chapman remains committed to providing him love and care until he finds his perfect match. “He’s one of the kindest cats I’ve ever met,” she remarked.
