In total, 84 cats were recovered from the Hanafin residence and are now being cared for by MSPCA-Angell shelters, which reported that the sudden influx of animals, some requiring medical attention, is putting a strain on their resources. Chris Schindler, Director of Law Enforcement for MSPCA-Angell, requested community assistance to manage the situation.
Andria’s body was discovered by her husband late Thursday night. He informed investigators that there had been recent conflicts between Andria and Ryan regarding the cats they fostered. Following the discovery, Ryan was sought as a person of interest and was taken into custody in Vermont later the same day.
Prosecutors have charged him with first-degree murder and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, with a court appearance scheduled in Woburn District Court. It remains unclear whether he has legal representation.
As the investigation continues, animal control officers were seen handling crates outside the home. Some of the rescued cats might be available for adoption soon, while others may require ongoing care. Schindler expressed compassion for those affected by the incident, emphasizing the organization’s commitment to providing care for the rescued animals.
A vigil was held for Andria Hanafin on Wednesday evening at Memorial Park in Reading. Friends described her as a caring individual and commended Ryan's past behavior, which they believed was inconsistent with the alleged crime. Authorities are also examining disturbing comments reported by a friend of Ryan, who mentioned he joked about wanting to kill his mother.
