Welcoming a dog is a significant decision for many families, as potential owners often consider factors such as breed size, activity level, and temperament. Dr. Brian Faulkner, a veterinary expert at Petplan, emphasized the importance of understanding different dog breeds to provide them with a fulfilling life.
According to the survey, the most popular puppy breeds include German Shepherds, Cocker Spaniels, and Miniature Dachshunds. Additionally, the most popular puppy name is Teddy, followed by Daisy, Bonnie, and Archie, reflecting a trend in choosing human names for pets.
The report's findings reveal that Labrador Retrievers, Border Collies, Cockapoos, and Beagles are part of Britain's top ten favorite dog breeds. Preferences vary among age groups; 10% of respondents aged 61 and over favored Labrador Retrievers, while younger respondents leaned towards Golden Retrievers and Millennials preferred German Shepherds.
German Shepherds topped the list in over half of the regions surveyed, including Greater London and Northern Ireland. Conversely, Labradors were most popular in Yorkshire and the Humber, and Border Collies led in Wales.
The survey also gathered insights on dog traits, with respondents identifying German Shepherds as the most loyal breed, while Chihuahuas were considered the most mischievous. Labrador Retrievers were favored for their reputation, ease of training, and positive exposure.
When questioned about their decision-making, 33% of current dog owners chose their breed primarily based on appearance, while 30% cited temperament as a deciding factor. Additionally, 30% of dog owners over 61 and 15% of Gen Z respondents reported that they rescued their dogs.
