New Guide Offers Insight for Veterinarians Expanding into Livestock Care

A rising interest in small-scale farming across suburban, peri-urban, rural, and urban areas in the United States has created an increased demand for veterinary services. The newly released book, Practical Guide to Adding Livestock to Your Veterinary Practice (Wiley, 2026), aims to provide veterinarians with essential information to address this demand. Co-authored by Michelle Buckley, an assistant professor of practice at Cornell University's College of Veterinary Medicine, the guide covers crucial topics such as physiology, management, handling, and regulatory compliance for various livestock, including cattle, pigs, small ruminants, and camelids. This resource is tailored for those less familiar with livestock medicine.

In a forthcoming book talk, Buckley plans to simplify livestock medicine and outline the fundamental knowledge necessary for veterinarians to adapt their clinical and business practices. This session will be valuable not only for veterinarians and students in animal and veterinary science but also for those interested in livestock and public health, particularly as local food systems continue to evolve.
