City officials reported they received information regarding serious allegations of animal abuse and neglect at the organization. Details about the duration of the partnership between Desert Hot Springs and the rescue organization, as well as the number of dogs sent to them, have not been disclosed.
The Whatcom County Sheriff's Office alerted detectives on Monday to potential animal cruelty conditions affecting nearly 30 dogs at a property on Russet Avenue. Upon investigation, detectives found the dogs in extremely poor condition, living in unsanitary environments without adequate food or water.
Many of the dogs were reportedly underweight and had injuries. The property owner, Ashley Georgia, 38, was identified as being solely responsible for the animals' care and welfare. All the dogs were safely removed and received medical treatment, and the investigation is ongoing.
City officials stated that they are fully cooperating with law enforcement and are committed to reviewing and strengthening their rescue partnership protocols. They emphasized their responsibility towards the animals and their commitment to their welfare even after placement with a rescue partner.
