The situation illustrates the unfortunate reality many pet owners face as they age. Despite his struggles, Pumpkin was noted by Timber’s Legacy, a rescue organization, for his affectionate nature. "He deserves to be in a loving home for whatever time he has left," they stated.
Upon arrival at the Manhattan Care Center, Pumpkin was found to be matted and thin, reflecting his owner's inability to provide proper care. Timber’s Legacy clarified that the conditions resulted not from neglect but from the owner’s own medical challenges.
Volunteers shared a video of Pumpkin at the shelter, showcasing his sweet demeanor. Evelyne, a rescuer, described him as a "little bit matted, a little bit thin, but certainly not short in love to give to people." The community responded positively, with multiple offers to care for him once he was rescued.
Recognizing the many health issues Pumpkin faced, the rescuers promptly took him to a veterinarian. In addition to being dehydrated and underweight, he suffered from an upper respiratory infection, ear infections, and dental disease. Despite these challenges, he displayed a loving personality, earning him the affectionate title of "purr machine" from veterinarians, who noted he was purring so loudly that it obscured his heartbeat.
After receiving medical treatment, Pumpkin was placed into quarantine before being released into a foster home. By the following month, his health had significantly improved, and he had formed bonds with everyone in his foster family. Timber’s Legacy believes this fostering arrangement could serve as a long-term palliative care solution, or “fospice,” to ensure his remaining days are filled with love and comfort.
Pumpkin has responded well to care, with his kidney values stabilizing as he receives proper nutrition and hydration. Timber’s Legacy expressed gratitude for the donations that support his veterinary care, emphasizing the community's role in his recovery. Pumpkin is now happily settled in with his foster family, enjoying companionship from both a dog and another cat.
