Pugs, Beagles, and Golden Retrievers are among the dog breeds with the highest risk of obesity, according to new research from the Royal Veterinary College (RVC). The study analyzed over 20,000 dogs to explore health issues in pets, revealing that approximately one in 14 dogs in the UK is overweight. This weight issue is linked to various health risks, including arthritis, breathing difficulties, heart disease, diabetes, and certain cancers.

Canine obesity, the most prevalent nutritional disorder in dogs, is often attributed to insufficient exercise and overfeeding. Other breeds with elevated obesity rates include English Springer Spaniels, Border Terriers, and Labrador Retrievers. In contrast, Shih Tzus, German Shepherds, and Yorkshire Terriers display lower obesity risks, although they can still be susceptible.
Camilla Pegram, an epidemiologist at the RVC, emphasized the power of big data in identifying obesity risk factors in dogs. She noted that while all dogs should be part of obesity prevention strategies, those at high risk, such as Pugs, Beagles, and Golden Retrievers, may require more focused efforts. Veterinarians advise dog owners to avoid giving excessive treats and to ensure their pets receive regular exercise. The appropriate weight for a dog varies by breed, making it crucial for owners to research what constitutes a healthy weight for their pets.
