In a recent interview, Falconer detailed BioCraft’s new safety dossier, production costs in relation to conventional meat, the FDA's regulatory pathway for cultured pet food, and the steps needed for the category to secure a substantial market share.

Since the last discussion, BioCraft has progressed toward commercialization with the publication of a safety dossier. Falconer noted a shift in focus from the ideological reasons for cultivating meat to the practical aspects of manufacturing, emphasizing the need for manufacturers to understand the costs, nutritional profiles, formulation performance, shelf life, and safety of the ingredients.

The company has retained a clear focus on developing cell-cultured ingredients tailored for pet food. By prioritizing pet dietary needs over creating meat substitutes for humans, BioCraft aims to meet the specific requirements of dogs and cats. As commercialization has approached, increased attention has been given to optimizing the ingredient's palatability and its combination with other components to create final products. The choice of using mouse as the first ingredient is based on its status as a natural prey species for cats and its potential to offer an alternative to more allergenic ingredients like beef and chicken.

Falconer emphasized the importance of transparency in the production process. Unlike conventional meat, where consumers may overlook production methods, clarity in how animal cell-cultured ingredients are made is crucial for building trust with manufacturers and veterinarians who advise pet owners.

BioCraft's safety dossier was constructed in layers, beginning with confirming the safety of its PE25 mouse cell line, following international safety guidelines. The safety assessment included verifying sterility, identity, and the absence of retroviruses, as well as ensuring that all raw materials used meet EU standards. The company addressed concerns that cultured ingredients might exhibit cancer-like behavior through various testing methods, concluding that the PE25 line displayed a non-tumorigenic profile.

With pilot-scale production already proven, BioCraft is now looking to scale to commercial levels. Falconer stated that while technical challenges exist in optimizing media and growth conditions for the cell line, the transition to large-scale production is manageable.

In 2024, BioCraft announced that its production costs had reached approximately $2.00 to $2.50 per pound, a target aimed at achieving parity with premium meat ingredients. However, Falconer acknowledged that producing high-quality, nutritionally rich cultured meat may never be cheaper than conventional methods due to the nutrients required for animal cell growth. The nutritional profile of the final product hinges on what the cells are fed during cultivation.

Regarding the regulatory landscape, the FDA oversees cultured pet food products, and the framework for novel animal food ingredients is still evolving. BioCraft is engaging with the FDA to navigate this complex regulatory pathway. Falconer explained that while there are established processes for assessing new animal food ingredients, pet food regulations differ from those governing human food.

As more companies enter the field of cultured pet food, Falconer views this development positively. BioCraft's method of growing complete animal cells offers distinct nutritional advantages compared to alternatives that rely solely on isolated proteins.

Interest from pet food manufacturers has shifted from hypothetical discussions to practical considerations, such as cost and supply issues. Smaller companies are particularly motivated by the desire for reliable supply options amidst price volatility in traditional meat markets.

Looking ahead to the next three to five years, Falconer emphasizes the need for continued technical and regulatory advancements. With confidence in the safety and nutritional viability of animal cell-cultured ingredients, BioCraft is set on producing sufficient quantities, enhancing nutritional profiles, expanding finished product offerings, and fostering regulatory frameworks that reassure manufacturers and pet owners.
