Concerns have emerged regarding the construction of a cat rescue and adoption centre adjacent to an aircraft engine repair site in Nantgarw. The proposal, submitted by Cats Protection, was approved by the RCT planning committee on April 16. Objections highlighted worries that the sounds from engine testing at the nearby GE Aerospace Wales facility could harm the welfare of the cats. Additionally, there were concerns over the lack of designated disabled parking and potential reductions in overall parking for the site.
Cats Protection assured that at least one volunteer would be present daily, including outside the public hours of operation, to ensure the cats are cared for properly. The centre will consist of 12 cat pens, staff facilities, storage, four parking spaces, and a delivery vehicle bay. It will operate with two to four volunteers on-site and planned public hours from 8 am to 5 pm, five days a week, by appointment only.
The planning report emphasized Cats Protection's reputation as a national charity with stringent welfare protocols and ongoing veterinary support at their centres. Although the facility will primarily serve as a rescue and adoption centre, it will facilitate the transfer of cats to dedicated rehoming centres open to the public.
Volunteers will ensure that the cats' daily needs are met and that the animals receive social interaction as per their preferences. The development plans also include landscaping and the installation of 32 solar panels on the roof.
Planning officers endorsed the application, stating it aligns with local development policies regarding biodiversity, visual impact, and the amenity of nearby residential properties. They noted that the proposed use is compatible with the surrounding commercial and industrial environment.
