Massachusetts animal shelters are waiving adoption fees for adult dogs during a three-day statewide event from Friday, August 21, to Sunday, August 23. The MSPCA-Angell and six other animal welfare organizations are participating in the Clear the Shelters adoption event, aimed at finding homes for dogs aged one year and older.

This marks the third and final adoption event in MSPCA-Angell’s summer series, which seeks to increase adoptions during a typically slow season. Previous events have successfully led to 183 adult dog adoptions across the participating organizations. Jamie Garabedian, project manager in MSPCA-Angell’s Animal Protection Division, noted the importance of these events in helping dogs find loving homes and freeing up space for other animals in need.
Fee-waived adoption events are designed to spotlight dogs that have been in shelters longer. Last month, a dog named Jade was adopted after a lengthy stay of 304 days, and the organization is hoping for a similar outcome for Sunshine, who has been waiting for a home since December. Garabedian described Sunshine as a playful and loving dog who is eager to find a family.
The adoption event will occur at all four MSPCA-Angell centers located in Boston, Methuen, Salem, and Centerville on Cape Cod. Additional participating organizations include Berkshire Humane Society, Boston Animal Control, Dakin Humane Society, Lowell Humane Society, Thomas J. O'Connor Animal Control & Adoption Center, and Worcester Animal Rescue League. Garabedian emphasized the variety of dogs available and the convenience for families to adopt from nearby shelters.
