The Animal Protective Association (APA) of Missouri has been awarded a $25,000 grant aimed at enhancing care for senior pets. The grant, issued by the Grey Muzzle Organization, recognizes the APA as one of the few selected groups nationwide to receive this competitive funding.

Sarah Javier, president and CEO of the APA, stated that the money will be used to expand support programs for pet owners, particularly focusing on pet food assistance and veterinary care for senior dogs. Javier highlighted that many families, especially those with limited financial resources, face difficult decisions regarding their aging pets due to the costs of veterinary care. "We’ll be able to provide more vaccinations to pets and offer veterinary financial assistance for urgent quality of life needs," she explained.
On a visit to the APA Adoption Center in Brentwood, Javier interacted with a senior dog named Cinnamon, emphasizing that breed labeling is avoided by the organization due to the often inaccurate visual identification of dogs. "Cinnamon is a blend of lots of great things," she expressed, noting that what potential adopters truly seek are the personality traits of the pets.
Emily Grossheider, executive director of the Grey Muzzle Organization, commented on the value of senior dogs, stating that they possess a remarkable capacity for love and companionship. She remarked that the grants support organizations like the APA in delivering essential medical care, foster care, and adoption services.
Javier indicated that approximately one in four pets seen at the APA's vaccine clinics are senior dogs. The organization aims to lower the intake of senior pets in shelters and has plans to offer mobile grooming services, especially for older pets with mobility issues.
The APA is also developing a new facility, APA North, located at 11755 Benham Road in north St. Louis County, with construction set to finish next year. This new site will provide veterinary care, community programs, and pet adoptions, while also reinforcing existing support programs such as an onsite food pantry and drive-up vaccine clinics.
