International Cat Day Celebrates Feline Welfare and Adoption

Last Saturday marked DOGust 1st, a day for celebrating dogs without known birthdays. Today, however, is International Cat Day, originally established by the International Fund for Animal Welfare and later transferred to International Cat Care. This day aims to highlight the vital role cats play in our lives and encourage responsible care for them.

We can show we care for cats by recognizing their significance and addressing issues affecting their welfare, such as neglect, abuse, and homelessness. It’s also an opportunity to promote fostering and adoption and support organizations dedicated to improving the lives of cats.

Individuals can celebrate by spending quality time with their own cats through play, grooming, and offering treats. Engaging with a cat fosters a strong bond over time. For those who don’t own a cat or wish to adopt another, visiting local shelters or rescue groups can lead to welcoming a new feline friend into their home.

The theme for International Cat Day 2026 is focused on raising awareness about cat welfare, encouraging adoption, and engaging in fun initiatives like the “World Cat Census,” which invites cat owners to upload photos of their pets.

According to the World Animal Foundation, which monitors cat populations, China has around 53 million cats, followed by Russia with 23 million. The United States leads with nearly 75 million cats. International Cat Day serves as an excellent occasion to either celebrate your feline companions or consider adopting a cat or kitten from a local shelter or rescue organization.
