The investigation led to a search warrant being executed on Wednesday at the Working Dogs of Nevada, located near West Lake Mead and Tenaya Way. Community members expressed shock upon witnessing police activity at the site. Antonio Jones, who frequents a gym next door, initially thought there was a celebration but quickly learned it was related to the dog seizure.
Jones emphasized the trust pet owners place in facilities like Working Dogs of Nevada, saying, "You trust your animal. They're like family."
Police began their investigation after receiving reports in early March regarding questionable training methods at the business. In addition to seizing the dogs, the business’s license was suspended.
The 35 dogs are currently housed at the Animal Foundation, which also took in 15 additional dogs from a separate investigation. Hilarie Grey, CEO of the Animal Foundation, mentioned that the total number of dogs at their facility has risen to 405. Grey highlighted the importance of addressing not only the physical but also the mental well-being of the dogs involved.
To help mitigate overcrowding, the Animal Foundation plans to transfer over 30 animals to rescues and shelters in Utah, which currently have a higher demand for adopters.
Mary Berube, the grandmother of Tabitha Berube, defended her granddaughter, stating she has a history of rescuing at-risk dogs and did not exhibit abusive behavior. "I never saw her abusing animals," she said.
Both Johnstone and Berube have posted bail, with their next court appearance set for April 29. The Animal Foundation encourages the public to consider fostering or adopting pets to assist with the overcrowding issue.
The Jason Heigl Foundation, an animal advocacy organization, has distanced itself from Working Dogs of Nevada, stating they have ceased all involvement with the business following this incident. They clarified that they never detected any misconduct during their engagement with the facility.
