PUTNAM COUNTY – Reading with dogs helps children build confidence, as dogs do not correct mistakes like parents or teachers do. Hudson Valley Pause for a Cause is collaborating with libraries in western Putnam and southern Dutchess counties to bring dogs to special reading sessions, where children can read either words or pictures in a relaxing and supportive environment.

A recent session was held on Saturday at the Howland Library in Beacon, with more events scheduled for October 8 at the Desmond-Fish Public Library in Garrison, and October 20 at the Butterfield Library in Cold Spring.
In addition, a two-year-old Golden Retriever named Mason has been a source of joy for students and staff at Putnam Valley Elementary School. Mason, a facility dog trained by Blue Path Service Dogs, has recently joined the school community and has become a cherished member of the learning environment, according to Principal Margaret Podesta.
Mason and his handler, Alex Gofman, regularly visit classrooms and are available to assist during any crises. Podesta expressed gratitude for the support from Blue Path Service Dogs and district administrators, including Assistant Superintendent Jackie Levine and Superintendent Jeremy Luft, as well as the Board of Education for enabling this initiative.
The addition of Mason was made possible through a grant written by Levine, funded by the Putnam Valley Education Foundation, which aims to promote innovative ideas for local students. Blue Path Service Dogs, based in Wappingers Falls, also provides service dogs for individuals with autism, emphasizing safety, companionship, and independence, with a mission to lead in the service dog community.
