As the founder and former president of Voters For Animal Rights (VFAR), Taylor expressed her honor and commitment to continue advocating for animal welfare in her new position. In this role, she will advise Mayor Zohran Mamdani on matters concerning the well-being of animals in the city.
The mission of the Mayor’s Office of Animal Welfare is to acknowledge the connections between human and animal well-being, aiming to create a more humane environment for both.
Taylor shared her experience with Plant Based News, stating, “I’ve spent years fighting for animal rights in New York City, and I’m honored to have the opportunity to do that work from inside City Hall. As a cat rescuer, I know how much New Yorkers love their pets – and how hard it can be to afford the veterinary care they need. Animal welfare is connected to the challenges people face in their own lives: when New Yorkers can’t afford their rent, they and their animals can lose their homes. I also know how much work remains to protect wildlife and other animals across the city. I’m excited to work with Mayor Mamdani and the advocates to make spay/neuter more accessible, protect animals and wildlife, and keep people and their pets together.”
On LinkedIn, Taylor mentioned, “I’m incredibly honored to continue fighting for animals from inside City Hall, and I’ll remain involved with VFAR in an advisory capacity.” She also reflected on VFAR’s accomplishments from the past decade, which include passing bans on wild animals in circuses, forbidding the sale of guinea pigs in pet stores, and securing funding for affordable spay and neuter services, among others.
Taylor previously led a campaign to ban horse-drawn carriages in the city, a topic that has gained renewed attention following recent incidents involving a tourist and a carriage horse.
In another appointment earlier this year, Mayor Mamdani selected Siddhartha Sanchez, a lifelong vegan and food justice advocate, to direct food policy for the city. Mamdani emphasized Sanchez's dedication to strengthening community solutions and ensuring food access as a fundamental human right.
