The MSPCA-Angell, along with six partner shelters in Massachusetts, is waiving adoption fees for dogs aged one year and older during the upcoming “World Pup” event. This soccer-themed adoption drive will take place from Friday, July 24, to Sunday, July 26. The initiative aims to facilitate the adoption of dogs at a time when shelters typically experience slow adoptions despite high intake numbers.

Inspired by the excitement of the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup, this event is the second of three fee-waived adoption opportunities planned for the summer. Jamie Garabedian, project manager for MSPCA-Angell’s Animal Protection Division, emphasized the challenges shelters face during the summer months, noting, "Summer is a challenging time for shelters because we’re facing pressure from both sides. Intake is especially high, while in past summers, adoptions have dipped." She highlighted the importance of these creative approaches to connect dogs with permanent homes and create space for incoming animals.
The event coincides with the second anniversary of the MASS coalition, which has successfully placed over 1,350 dogs and 357 cats into homes since its inception.
Participating locations include MSPCA adoption centers in Boston, Methuen, Salem, and Centerville, as well as the Berkshire Humane Society, Boston Animal Care and Control, Dakin Humane Society, Lowell Humane Society, Thomas J. O’Connor Animal Control & Adoption Center, and Worcester Animal Rescue League. Adoption hours vary by location, and further details can be found on their websites.
