Uncle, recognized as a community cat, is currently recovering in emergency care. Tails of Hope estimates his initial medical costs at $1,779.56, with additional expenses anticipated as he heals.
A representative for Tails of Hope emphasized Uncle’s significance to the community. "Animals depend on us to protect them, and community cats are no exception. Uncle has lived in this area for years and should have been able to live safely in his neighborhood," they stated.
Photos of Uncle before and after the injury were shared, with a note that one of the images may be graphic for some viewers. The representative underscored the importance of giving Uncle the necessary medical care and comfort, stating, "He survived something no animal should have to experience. Our hope is that the community will rally around him and recognize the cruelty faced by stray and feral cats."
In addition to seeking help for Uncle's medical costs, Tails of Hope used this opportunity to remind residents about local animal welfare laws and firearm regulations. Both Hermitage and Farrell have ordinances aimed at ensuring the humane treatment of pets, prohibiting acts such as poisoning or denying necessary veterinary care, with potential penalties for violations.
Pennsylvania's animal cruelty laws also apply, designating mistreatment resulting in serious injury to an animal as a second-degree misdemeanor.
Although the exact location of the shooting was not disclosed, it occurred within the Farrell/Hermitage area, which enforces strict regulations against the discharge of firearms in city limits, allowing for exceptions only in cases of defense or hunting.
