The County Animal Services has officially opened its new Santee Animal Shelter, marking a significant transition from the previous Bonita site, which is now closed. The move was initiated on Tuesday, with vehicles transporting over 500 animals—including dogs, cats, ducks, and horses—approximately 15 miles to the new location.

Dr. Brieana Sarvis, Director of Animal Services, emphasized the priority of ensuring a fear-free and low-stress environment for the animals during the relocation. Although the new shelter is still completing work on some dog kennels and the livestock area, the organization is optimistic about the facility’s upgraded features.
Santee resident Sheri Tiemann visited the shelter on its opening day, expressing enthusiasm for its completion. Francisco Orozco also arrived to reclaim his dog Peluche, noting the cleanliness and organization of the new facility compared to the Bonita shelter. An investigation last year highlighted deficiencies in the kennel cleaning practices at the old site.
Despite having fewer kennels at the Santee facility—83 compared to Bonita's 150—the new setup features larger, more effective spaces for both dogs and cats. The addition of medical and surgical suites allows for enhanced on-site treatment, while outdoor play areas contribute to a more comfortable setting for the animals.
Sarvis mentioned that the new arrangement will facilitate reduced stress for the animals during cleaning and care. Furthermore, she acknowledged ongoing challenges with pet populations, particularly with large dogs, but expressed optimism regarding their foster program and adoption rates to help manage kennel availability.
County Animal Services operates in two locations, the new Santee shelter and a facility in Carlsbad, serving unincorporated areas in the county. Residents are reminded to reach out to the San Diego Humane Society for issues related to stray animals or lost pets.
