Kelly Erie, the shelter's volunteer manager, emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating that many dogs and puppies are waiting for families. "Those that are looking for a dog or puppy, now is the time. Shelters are full. What they are missing is that one missing piece of the puzzle. That is a family, so it all starts with you," Erie noted.
Erie advised potential adopters to conduct research before adopting a dog, including considerations about the size of the dog and the level of activity it requires. This preparation can help individuals select a breed that matches their lifestyle.
For those unable to adopt, Erie mentioned alternative ways to contribute, such as sponsoring a pet by providing financial support for its care at the shelter. Additionally, volunteering is a vital option, as shelters and rescue groups are always seeking help.
Adopting a dog may not change the world, according to Erie, but it can significantly alter the life of a shelter dog.
The Siouxland Humane Society also offers guidance for new pet owners through the 3-3-3 rule: pets typically need three days to decompress, about three weeks to adjust to new routines, and up to three months to feel fully comfortable in their new environment.
