A joint operation between the Garden Route SPCA Mossel Bay branch and the Mossel Bay Fire, Rescue and Disaster Management (FRDM) successfully rescued a ginger cat trapped in a stormwater pipe on July 16. Residents Renier Stander and Keegan Bronte discovered the cat while hanging laundry outside their home. Hearing persistent meowing, they found the cat frightened and soaked inside the pipe.

Despite their attempts to coax it out with food, the cat was wedged too tightly to move. Animal carer Johannes Mthobisa from the SPCA arrived at the scene shortly after receiving the call. Upon assessing the situation, he noted that there was no way for the cat to escape on its own. He and fellow carer Sisa Mtumbeza quickly contacted the fire department for assistance.
Firefighters employed a low-risk rescue method by introducing a controlled amount of water into the drain, gently guiding the cat towards an outlet. Mthobisa and Mtumbeza were prepared to catch the exhausted cat as it emerged.
After the rescue, Mthobisa expressed relief for the residents, the SPCA team, and especially for the frightened cat, stating that such moments demonstrate the value of every life. The municipality emphasized the importance of working together in these rescues, highlighting the need for specialized techniques and careful planning.
Following the rescue, the cat was taken to the SPCA's Mossel Bay branch, where it received care and comfort. The cat is expected to be available for adoption soon.
