MIAMI VALLEY, Ohio (WKEF) — Thirteen dogs affected by Hurricane Isaias, which made landfall as a category two storm over the weekend, have been taken in by a local animal shelter. As the hurricane struck Florida, shelters in regions further north, including the Miami Valley, prepared for the influx of displaced animals.

In Alabama, ahead of the storm, efforts were made to relocate pets from impacted areas. Jessie Sullivan, director of shelter operations, explained that shelters aimed to free up space in anticipation of taking in more animals displaced by the hurricane. "All of the animals on these transports are animals who are already in shelters before the storm," Sullivan noted.
SICSA, a network partner of Best Friends Animal Society in Utah, received confirmation on Saturday morning about the arrival of the dogs. The newly arrived dogs are currently acclimating to their new surroundings and are expected to be ready for adoption soon.
Sullivan emphasized the importance of a calm environment to help the dogs settle in. She described them as friendly and outgoing, eager to meet potential adopters. At a recent adoption event, SICSA successfully placed 13 dogs and 13 cats in new homes, creating space for these new arrivals.
The dogs, medium-sized mixed breeds, have been spayed, neutered, and vaccinated. SICSA plans to prepare the dogs for adoption this week, with updates available on their Facebook page and website.
