The Montgomery County Animal Services and Adoption Center (MCASAC) in Derwood will offer free pet adoptions on Saturday, August 1, as part of NBCUniversal Local’s 2026 “Clear the Shelters” initiative. Last year, over 100 pets were successfully adopted during this event.

The center, located at 7315 Muncaster Mill Rd., will open at 11 a.m., and adoptions will follow a first-come, first-served process. Adoption Supervisor Faith Koleszar expressed enthusiasm about the event, stating, "Clear The Shelters is always an exciting time of year, and we love seeing all of the empty kennels afterward. We have so many wonderful pets looking for new homes."
Prospective adopters are encouraged to research the adoption process and view available animals on the Montgomery County Government website prior to their visit. Same-day adoptions will be permitted for approved adopters.
Those intending to adopt should bring a leash and collar for dogs and a carrier for cats or small animals. To facilitate finding homes for as many pets as possible, animals will not be available for hold.
MCASAC, operated by the Montgomery County Office of Animal Services, serves as the County’s only open-admission municipal shelter. The center promotes responsible pet ownership through adoptions, education, outreach, and animal protection services. Animal Services officers are available around the clock for complaints and emergencies.
