Golden Retrievers are the leading searched-for breed in 38 states, making them the top choice nationwide. Following them are the French Bulldog and the Bernese Mountain Dog, which rank second and third, respectively. French Bulldogs are particularly favored in nine states, including Arkansas and Texas, while Bernese Mountain Dogs rank highly in Montana, Utah, and Wyoming.
The study was conducted by pet nutrition experts at PetLab, who analyzed data on over 200 AKC-recognized dog breeds using Google’s Keyword Planner over the past year. They determined that families appreciate Golden Retrievers for their friendly disposition and ease of training, which contributes to their popularity. The breed is also well-loved among celebrities, with notable owners including Ryan Reynolds, Nick Jonas, and Oprah Winfrey.
Other popular breeds identified in the research are the Newfoundland, which ranks fourth and is most searched in Alaska, and the Dogo Argentino, which is the fifth favorite breed in the U.S. Dogos are recognized for their loyalty and strength but may not be suitable for first-time dog owners.
A spokesperson from PetLab commented on the insights, highlighting the widespread affection for dogs in the U.S. and noting the Golden Retriever's significant lead in popularity across various states.
