On August 26, 2026, Tori Liford and Diana Candelaria launched Casita de Miau, a cat lounge located at 210 S Market Ave in downtown Springfield. The lounge serves as a venue for visitors to interact with cats while promoting cat adoption through a partnership with the Humane Society. In its first month, Casita de Miau successfully facilitated 11 adoptions.

The couple was inspired to create a cat lounge while noticing an abundance of cats in their Springfield neighborhood. They recognized a gap in the community for such a space and decided to open Casita de Miau, collaborating with the Humane Society to provide vetted cats for adoption.

Casita de Miau selects cats based on their sociability, making it more likely for kittens to be present. Liford, the co-owner and creative director, emphasized that kittens adapt well to social environments since they have not yet developed antisocial behaviors. While the focus is on younger cats, older cats can also join if they pass socialization tests with other cats.

One notable adoption story is that of Truman, previously known as Myers, who was adopted by Bookmarx, a local bookstore that houses another well-known bookstore cat, Ms. C. Casita de Miau aims to be a community hub, described by Liford as a “third place” for people of various backgrounds to come together in kindness.

Visitors can enjoy a shoes-off environment for the safety of the cats, with shoe covers available for those in need. While outside beverages are permitted, food is not allowed. For guests aged 14 and over, the cost for access to the cat lounge is $10 for 30 minutes or $16 for an hour, with discounted rates for longer study sessions available.

Those interested in adopting can express their interest to Casita de Miau and complete an application that is forwarded to the Humane Society. Adoption fees support the Humane Society after the process is completed. Liford expressed gratitude for the community’s support, stating, "We can't appreciate the cat lovers of Springfield enough for keeping this such a safe space of expression and relaxation - for the visitors and the kitties!"
