Robotic Dog Ben Ben Enhances Social Connections in Central California

Carmen Maroney, chief operating officer of Robo Enrichment, highlighted the novelty of the initiative, stating, "We do social recreational engagement, utilizing a robot dog. It's the first time it's ever been done, and it started right here in the Central Valley." The unique element of Ben Ben is its ability to interface with humans in meaningful ways.

The robotic dog engages with users, prompting smiles and laughter during interactions, according to Paul Gonzales, CEO of Robo Enrichment. He noted, "He runs around with them. He plays games. You see smiles and laughter."

For residents like Crystal Faith Isch from Clovis, Ben Ben provides companionship akin to that of a real pet. "We get to have fun, play games and everything else and love him," she shared.

Ben Ben is one of several robotic dogs operated by Robo Enrichment, which also includes another robotic dog named Parker. These robotic companions can work independently or be controlled by users based on the situation.

Robo Enrichment serves various age groups throughout Central California and reports positive outcomes from the use of robotic dogs in their programs. Maroney mentioned, "We're really helping to bring people out of their shells. It's part of the STEM program. We call it stimulate your mind, stimulate your mind with activities."

The company emphasizes the benefits of the robotic dogs for individuals facing loneliness and social anxiety. Gonzales pointed out that while users are aware the dog is a robot, it evokes feelings similar to that of a stuffed animal, which many people also seek for comfort.

As the program develops, Robo Enrichment plans to incorporate additional innovative technologies.
