CINCINNATI (WKRC) - Gelato, a rescue kitten in Cincinnati, has gained significant online attention as he recovers from a spinal injury with the aid of a wheelchair, now enhanced with new 3D-printed wheels. Staff at Cincinnati Animal CARE quickly identified Gelato's need for additional support as he used his front legs while dragging his hind legs. Tests confirmed he had suffered a spinal injury, but he still had some feeling and movement in his back legs. The medical team fashioned a makeshift wheelchair with various materials, including cardboard and Hot Wheels, to promote his mobility.
Mallory Smith, the veterinary assistant lead at Cincinnati Animal CARE who is fostering Gelato, noted the importance of helping him gain autonomy and lead a more active life. "He started wanting to run around and play and be a little bit more active. He couldn't really do that on his own," she said.
Smith emphasized the team's innovative approach to aiding rescue animals, supported by Lisa Colina, senior manager of community engagement, who described the team's resourcefulness in handling pet care challenges.
The kitten's story gained traction on social media, helping to raise awareness for special-needs animals. Smith expressed her satisfaction with the public interest, saying it would likely lead to many adoption inquiries for Gelato once he is ready.
Recently, Gelato received a sturdier, adjustable wheelchair crafted by an engineer known to Smith. The new device took approximately two hours to print and offers more support as Gelato continues to develop.
As part of his recovery, Gelato has begun to stand unaided for short periods, although he is not yet able to walk or run independently. Smith is hopeful that Gelato might not need the wheelchair in the future and anticipates he will be ready for adoption in a couple of weeks.
"The shelter industry can be really hard, emotionally and physically, so getting to see the success stories is inspiring," Smith remarked. Cincinnati Animal CARE is also celebrating its sixth anniversary with a promotion offering $6 adoptions for adult dogs and cats. In support of Gelato, the shelter plans to sell T-shirts to benefit its clinic, with availability expected by the end of the week.
