Launched on September 24, 2026, ahead of the 2026 Mars Global Adoption Weekend, the research explores barriers to pet adoption and aims to provide prospective pet parents with educational resources and expert guidance to overcome these challenges. The study surveyed over 26,000 individuals across 14 countries, indicating that while 58% of current pet owners did not adopt their pets, 28% expressed interest in adopting in the future if given sufficient support.
Key concerns identified among those considering adoption include unknown medical history (33%), behavioral background (27%), and household compatibility (25%). The research suggests that many potential adopters would benefit from improved nutrition guidance; 71% of new pet owners reported changing their adopted pet's diet immediately after adoption.
Esther Bijsmans, DVM, PhD and Pet Nutrition & Health Science Expert at Mars Pet Nutrition, emphasized the importance of practical guidance, stating that transitioning to a new home should follow the 3-3-3 rule: making the pet feel safe in the first three days, establishing routines in three weeks, and allowing three months for pets to fully adjust.
The Adoption Hub will offer expert-backed advice and resources to assist with both pre- and post-adoption processes. Anthony Guerrieri, Vice President of Corporate Affairs for Pet Nutrition at Mars, stated that many people are eager to adopt but lack confidence about the process. By providing trusted resources and support, the initiative aims to simplify adoption and encourage more households to welcome pets into their lives.
The 2026 Mars Global Adoption Weekend will expand to over 30 countries this year, further promoting pet adoption and supporting local shelters. For those interested in adoption, the Mars Adoption Hub will list participating shelters and provide details on preparing for a new pet.
