According to the shelter's announcement, feline panleukopenia can spread through direct contact as well as via contaminated litter boxes, bedding, bowls, clothing, hands, and other surfaces. Cats can also appear healthy while incubating the virus, making detection challenging.

The shelter urges the public to refrain from bringing in stray cats to prevent further spread of the virus. Individuals who encounter a healthy-looking stray cat are encouraged to contact the shelter at 217-535-3065 to discuss safe options.

To help alleviate crowding and reduce exposure within the shelter, those who can temporarily foster a cat or kitten without illness symptoms are invited to reach out to the Sangamon County Animal Control.
