Feline panleukopenia primarily affects kittens and unvaccinated cats, spreading through direct contact and contaminated items such as litter boxes, bedding, bowls, and clothing. The virus can also be present in healthy-appearing cats that are incubating the disease.

Due to the ease of transmission, the center has requested that the public refrain from bringing in stray cats unless absolutely necessary. They acknowledge concerns for stray animals but stress that admitting additional cats could heighten the risk of exposure to those already in their care. Individuals who find a healthy stray cat are encouraged to call 217-535-3065 for guidance.

The center also welcomes offers to temporarily foster healthy cats or kittens, which could alleviate overcrowding and lower exposure risk during this outbreak. Interested individuals can inquire about fostering through the Sangamon County Animal Control & Adoption Center or the Animal Protective League.
