Photographer Mike Ruiz Launches Charity Calendar for Animal Rescue

The calendar showcases both fitness legends and rescued animals, aiming to spread awareness about the importance of adopting pets instead of purchasing them from breeders or pet stores. Ruiz noted a concerning rise in the number of dogs abandoned in shelters in 2026, emphasizing that each dog bought from a breeder or store potentially leaves one in need of a home.

The floral designs featured in the calendar, created by Meghan Kramer of MADE OF LEAVES, are intended to challenge the negative stereotypes associated with rescue dogs. By presenting these animals surrounded by flowers—symbols of beauty and life—the imagery seeks to foster compassion and encourage adoption.

Ruiz, whose clients include celebrities such as Anne Hathaway, Kim Kardashian, and Dolly Parton, expressed admiration for the dedication of fitness models and finds fulfillment in capturing their work. He is also an animal advocate, inspired by his own rescue dog, Oliver, which led to the inception of the calendar.

Emily Gear, President and Founder of Louie’s Legacy, expressed gratitude for being chosen once again as beneficiaries of the calendar's sales. The partnership began a decade ago, raising about $80,000 in its inaugural year, which significantly contributed to the rescue's operations. Since its founding in 2009, Louie's Legacy has saved over 25,000 animals, with annual operational costs of around one million dollars.

Ruiz emphasized that 100% of the calendar's sales will directly support Louie’s Legacy, reinforcing the message that each purchase contributes to improving the lives of neglected and abused dogs. He encourages people to view the calendar as both a holiday gift and a chance to raise awareness about animal welfare.
