ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Bernalillo County Fire Rescue (BCFR) crews recently rescued Atlas, a dog weighing between 120 and 130 pounds, after he became too exhausted during a challenging hike on a mountain trail.

BCFR reported that the difficult terrain complicated the rescue efforts. Responders trekked into the area, taking turns carrying Atlas before they secured him in a Stokes rescue basket for the descent.
The operation spanned approximately four miles and lasted nearly five hours. Fortunately, Atlas was not injured and was safely reunited with his family once they reached the trailhead.
This incident has led to a reminder for pet owners venturing into mountainous areas. Experts advise bringing enough water, monitoring pets for exhaustion, and noting that the return journey can be just as strenuous as the initial hike.
Atlas returned home safely after a challenging day, earning praise from his rescuers.
