The rescue operation involved collaboration among several organizations. MSPCA-Angell credited the Greater Birmingham Humane Society for their efforts in taking in animals from shelters within the hurricane's projected path, with the BISSELL Pet Foundation coordinating the transport north.
Taking in the dogs helps free up space in Alabama shelters to accommodate animals displaced by the hurricane. Following their arrival, the dogs will go through a mandatory 48-hour quarantine and receive necessary medical care before being made available for adoption.
Hurricane Isaias, which was the first hurricane of the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season, made landfall near Destin, Florida, on Friday night as a Category 2 storm. It weakened quickly to a post-tropical cyclone. The storm is expected to impact parts of Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, and Georgia, bringing strong winds, flash floods, and storm surges through Sunday. As of now, two fatalities have been reported, and tens of thousands have evacuated from affected areas.
