SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WNDU) - Lucy, a 7.5-year-old dog, is in search of a new home at the Humane Society of St. Joseph County. Matt from the Humane Society shared that Lucy has been at the shelter since early August and has quickly become popular among the staff due to her friendly demeanor and love for walks and play.

Matt describes Lucy as a "Velcro dog" who enjoys being close to people and has a gentle nature. She gets along well with other dogs, cats, and children, having previously lived with another dog and interacted positively with kids and cats.
Lucy is familiar with basic commands like "sit" and is particularly motivated by treats. Matt noted that although she has skin allergies—common in older dogs—they are managed with routine medication and are currently under control.
While Lucy's exact breed is not known, she likely has some Labrador Retriever ancestry.
In October, the shelter is waiving adoption fees for all adult dogs and cats over one year old, thanks to a sponsorship from Girly Leap. Matt explained that older pets like Lucy often remain in shelters longer compared to younger animals, making this sponsorship critical for helping them find homes.
The Humane Society will be at Girly Leap later today and the Indiana Dinosaur Museum next Saturday for adoption events. Those interested in adopting Lucy or learning about other pets can visit humanesocietystjc.org, call (574) 255-4726, or stop by the shelter located at 2506 Grape Road.
