Survey Highlights the Emotional and Physical Consequences of Dog Obesity for Owners

Engaging over 600 dog owners who identified their dogs as overweight, the survey explored the emotional connections owners have with feeding their pets. Many owners reported feeling guilty when their dogs appear hungry, with 75% agreeing this sentiment affects their feeding choices. Additionally, 67% of respondents believe food is a primary source of happiness for their dogs.

Despite their worries, 88% of surveyed owners with overweight dogs expressed concern over their pets' body condition, and 92% agreed that weight loss would be beneficial. Notably, 92% felt sadness when their pets were unable to join in activities they previously enjoyed, with 45% observing their dogs exhibiting less energy for play.

Veterinary expert Jason Gagné, DVM, emphasized the conflict many owners face: recognizing the health detriments of excess weight while fearing the loss of their bond with their dogs if feeding habits are modified.

The survey indicated that owners often resort to DIY weight-loss strategies with limited success; 68% experienced little to no weight loss in their dogs despite efforts to reduce food portions and increase exercise.
