The Labrador Retriever is particularly favored for its friendly and sociable demeanor, making it a beloved choice in states including Florida, Michigan, and Texas. Following closely behind is the Golden Retriever, ranked as the most popular breed in eight states, particularly in northern regions like California and Idaho, where outdoor activities are abundant.
Interestingly, smaller breeds also find their place. Chihuahuas are particularly popular in Arizona and Utah, where their compact size suits the warmer climates and their low exercise requirements are appealing to pet owners.
The hybrid Poodle crossbreeds, collectively known as “Doodles,” are also gaining traction. Notably, North Dakota's favorite breed is the Cockapoo, a mix between a Cocker Spaniel and a Poodle.
Certain states have unique preferences, with the French Bulldog becoming a local favorite in Rhode Island and the Dachshund seeing significant popularity in Nebraska. South Dakota has distinguished itself by favoring the Cardigan Welsh Corgi.
Additionally, the study examined trends among pet sitters, revealing a preference for rare breeds. The Icelandic Sheepdog was the top request among sitters, followed by the Borzoi and other less common breeds such as the Sloughi and Dandie Dinmont Terrier. This reflects a desire among sitters to encounter unique dogs during their assignments.
