The shelter is hosting the "Homeward Bound" event to encourage adoptions, with the reduced fee significantly lower than the usual charges—approximately $280 plus HST for dogs and puppies, and up to $190 for cats and kittens.
Greg Madeley, head of animal care and well-being for Mississauga Animal Services, emphasized the importance of thoughtful adoption processes. Applicants undergo interviews, meet the animals with family members, and must show an understanding of the responsibilities associated with pet ownership. "It's not just come and adopt a pretty kitten and puppy; it takes getting them to the proper home so they have a fighting chance," Madeley stated.
While interested individuals can attend the event without prior appointments, adopters must be at least 18 years old. Madeley noted that, although shelters can temporarily care for animals, pets typically thrive better in permanent homes.
In Halifax, Sam Cole, communications and marketing coordinator for Bide Awhile, mentioned that despite high interest in adoptions, shelters prioritize finding suitable matches by considering factors such as an animal's medical history and temperament, alongside the adopter's lifestyle.
